History of Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe National Park was declared the fifth national park in Sri Lanka on 30th June 1972, during a ceremony led by the Ministry of Shipping and Tourism. The park was established as part of the Udawalawe Reservoir project, with the primary goal of protecting the catchment area and providing a safe habitat for wild elephants. Later, a second reservoir known as the Maw-Ara Tank was constructed within the park between 1991 and 1998. Before its designation as a national park, this area was used by local communities for shifting (chena) cultivation. Following its declaration, residents relocated to more suitable areas, allowing the land to be preserved and restored as a protected wildlife sanctuary.
